For example, Sometimes we give someone help purely for the gratitude. In our own minds we think, it feels good to help someone, but deep down we want to be recognized for helping them and are upset when we don't receive the acknowledgement. Instead of simply helping them, we want something in return. Our actions can come from unhealthy motives such as pride, insecurity, and fear. We need to keep our motives in check. Take time to look past your actions to what lies behind them. Ask God to show you what He sees when He examines your motives and give you the wisdom and strength to put your motives in check.
One way to keep our motives in check is growing in our personal relationship with Christ, placing God number one in your life surrendering all to Him. We need to be in God's word, seeking the opportunities that He has planned and giving Him all the glory.
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
