There are big gut-wrenching trials and then there are small trials, some will concern people, sickness, finances, criticism and so on, but he most particularly has in mind the trials of being persecuted, the trials that come as a consequence of one's faith in Christ.
The Apostle Paul knew the overwhelming powers of trials, listen to what he said in 2 Corinthians 1:8 - "For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself." Paul experienced burden beyond his strength and he thought he was going to die, yet listen to verse 9: "Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead." Wow! We too my friend can have this strength through the trials that we go through. It is not our strength but through Christ (Philippians 4:13). Then listen to 2 Corinthians 1:10: "He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again."
My friend, when trials come, let us draw from and be encouraged by Paul's words; learn not to rely on ourselves but on Our Savior who is with us 24/7, Who promises to never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).
Remember this: 1Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
