The Apostle Paul encourages us to live our lives for Christ in Colossians 1:10 'So as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.
At the time Paul wrote to the Colossians there was a lot of false teaching going around and he wanted to encourage the believers to walk worthy of the Lord, thus they would be equipped so as to please the Lord in all things in their walk. In order to know the difference between the false teachings, Paul encouraged them to study and grow in their knowledge of God's word. It is the same with any relationship, we need to spend time with the person in order to get to know them just as we need to study God's word to know more about Him and His will for our lives. We are to study and learn until the knowledge of His will just floods our lives—floods us to such a degree that doing His will flows out into conduct and behavior. As we walk with the Lord our lives will bear fruit.
God's word empowers us to live for the Lord in every aspect of our lives.
