As we memorize scripture, we hide this treasure in our hearts. The beautiful thing about hiding scripture in our hearts is that it is a deterrent to sin. This alone should inspire us to memorize scripture. Think about that, as we approach a situation, the Holy Spirit brings to our attention the right scripture to steer us in the right direction. However, memorization alone will not keep us from sin; we must also put God’s Word to work in our lives, making it a vital guide for everything we do.
James 1:22. 'But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.'
There are many Christians who will go to church and hear the sermon; some may attend a Bible study and listen to the teacher, but my friend, this is not enough! We need to practice what the Word of God says! I like what Warren Wiersbe said: "Too many Christians mark their Bibles, but their Bibles never mark them!"
You can sit and take notes marking your Bible, but if it is not affecting your life, if you are not applying it to your life, you will not grow spiritually. The Bible is our instruction book for life! Memorize it, Treasure it, and Practice what it says!
