Have you been through a gut wrenching trial and you feel the world crashing down around you when you suddenly see a ray of hope, a light at the end of the tunnel?
This is what Naomi, Ruth and Orpah experienced as we continue in our study of Ruth 1:6-7. Naomi, devastated by the loss of her husband and both of her sons, hears that the famine is over in Israel. She and her daughters-in-law begin to make the journey to Israel.
Although she had decided to return to Israel, Naomi encouraged Ruth and Orpah to stay in Moab with their families and start their lives over as we see in Ruth 1:8-13. The girls wanted to go with Naomi, but Naomi did not want the same fate of her life on them. Even in her desperate situation, Naomi had a selfless attitude.
You can feel the deep sorrow that fills Naomi’s soul. She speaks of the Levitate Marriage in verses eleven through thirteen whereas the brother of a deceased man marries the brother’s widow and provides for her and carries on the brother’s family name. Naomi knew this was not possible as she lost both of her sons. She loved her daughters-in-law and set a blessing upon them that the Lord would deal kindly with them.
My friends, take comfort in knowing that even in the midst of gut wrenching trials, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. This too shall pass. Let us have a selfless attitude like Naomi and consider the needs of others. When you act selflessly, others are encouraged to follow your example.
